Flensburg fjord
Flensburg
is an old seafarers’ and merchants’ town and received its town charter in 1284.
In past centuries, Flensburg enjoyed great prosperity through a booming rum import
trade. Who the town belonged to was constantly being disputed by Denmark and Germany
(sadly in the form of wars). However, thanks to a plebiscite vote, Flensburg ultimately
became part of Germany in 1920. Today, Flensburg is better known, at least amongst
the car-driving majority, as the place where traffic offence penalty points are
recorded. And from dawn to dusk, the local greeting you’ll hear again and again
is “Moin, moin”. Flensburg-on-the-fjord is an ideal base camp for a successful
holiday cruise. Here, right outside the gates of Scandinavia, you can charter
boats and sail the western Baltic Sea, the Flensburg fjord, Kiel Bay, Schleimünde
nature reserve and many other areas worthy of exploration, right along to the
Danish ‘South Sea’, with its many island and coves.
