Syros Right in the center of the Cyclades you`ll find Syros with a size of 84 square metres and a coastline of 87 kilometres. Ermoupoli is the capitol of the island and of the Cyclades at the same time and the trading and administration center. Syros is mountainous in the north – the summit of the mountain range, Pirgos, is 431 metres in height - and characterized by fertile plateaus in the south. These various conditions of ground also have had an influence on the formation of the coastline with tiny bays, mountain ranges and capes and the two large bays of Phinicas at the western side and Ermoupoli at the northern side. From times of magnificence the island has preserved much of its significance and is to be recommended for spending the holidays as it has a good touristic infrastructure and besides its delighting scenery and the lovely villages also historic and archaeological monuments and treasures. Visitors can gain a whole host of lasting impressions when they arrive at Ermoupoli, the port of the island and when they get to see the city and its very special architecture. Especially worth mentioning regarding the official buildings and monuments are the town hall build according to plans of Ziller between 1876 and 1881 at Miaouli Square, the statue of Admiral Miaouli and the city theatre “Apollon”, and a miniature version of the Scala in Milan. The Miaouli Square is particularly lively during the day, whereas in the evening cafés and cake shops are the most popular meeting places.
