 Portoferraio/Elba
Two fortresses are guarding Portoferraio and its hustle
and bustle at the harbour and the picturesque old town with its small palazzi.
Countless small bays with rocky, sandy or shingle beaches offer possibilities
for bathing, sailing, surfing and diving. Portoferraio ( "Iron Port") has been
existing since the 4th century at the tip of a cape in the north of the island.
In the years of 1943/44 a lot of it had been destroyed. In 1548 under Cosimo I
the fortification of this important trading center was built: the fortress of
Forte della Stella has the shape of a five-sided irregular star and the Forte
del Falcone that of an irregular rectangle and Lingučlla nearby the sea.
