| Castellammare
di Stabia
The city owes its name to an old castle that had
been built in the 9th century by the Sorrentines to defence their country nearby
the sea ( Castrum ad Mare). The city is of Italian origin. Recent finds have attested
a settlement around 650 BC. The town took part in a war against Rome and was destroyed
by the Silla troops on April 30 in 89BC. |  Afterwards
it remained a popular villa and spa town of Roman Patrician families but was buried
together with Pompej and Herculaneum when the Vesuvius errupted in 79 AD.
Being praised by Plinius, Columella, Silvio Italico and Appiano, Ovid and Seneca,
Galeno and Cassiodoro - the city started flourishing again and had been fortified
by Karl I of Anjou in the 13th century. |
