 Castiglioncello
is situated on the Etruscan Riviera in Italy, 35 Km
south of Pisa and has its origins in an Etruscan settlement,
the main inhabited area of which stretched from Castiglioncello
to Populonia. Numerous architectural findings and museums
in the vicinity bear witness to the glorious history
of the Etruscans, who then went on to found Rome itself.
The town’s landmarks are a 16th century tower
and the Castello Pasquini with its beautiful botanical
gardens. The tower was originally built by the Medicis
to repel pirates.
Castiglioncello’s water quality is amongst the
best in the world and is subject to ongoing inspections
by the international Blue Flag Organisation.
 The
town took on international significance as a result
of the "Castiglioncello School" (SCUOLA DI
CASTIGLIONCELLO, or the Macchiaioli School of Painting),
which saw Italian impressionists arriving from all parts
of the country to pursue their artistic activities here.
These included famous Italian painters such as Fattori,
Sarnesi, Abati and Cabianca. Many a famous person from
home and abroad chose and continues to choose Castiglioncello
as a holiday residence, including Marcello Mastroianni,
Pannelli, Gassman, Trapani, Spadolini, and many more
besides. Famous Italian artists such as Pirandello,
Fucini, and Marradi visited and made their homes here.
Today, Castiglioncello is a popular Italian holiday
resort which has retained its typical Italian charm.
Looking out to sea from Castiglioncello provides a view
of the islands of Elba, Gorgona and Capraia and, on
a clear day, even Corsica is visible on the horizon.
