Italy,
get away from it all …on towards the sun!
Italian
mainland
The
Italian west coast and its islands offer a wide range
of possibilities for sailing. Geneva is the heart of the
region of Liguria. From here the “Riviera dei Fiori”,
the flower riviera, runs in a south western direction
to the Côte d`Azur. To the southeast of Geneva is
the romantic steep coast of the “Riviera di Levante”.
One of the most
beautiful harbours in the Mediterranean Sea is undoubtedly
Portofino, where the typical Ligurian, narrow houses in
pastel are arranged around the anchorages and where the
world comes together. |

Further in the south is Elba
presenting itself – not only for leisurely family
cruises around the island but also as a starting point
to Corsica. Sardinia, the second largest island of the
Mediterranean Sea has only a few years ago started to
be touristically developed but still has preserved its
very own character that often quite differs from the rest
of Italy. Deep bays, cliffs and bizarre rock formations,
numerous caves and grottos that reach into the country
alternate with large sandy beaches and sand dunes

A
“must” for every yachtsman is the “Costa
Smeralda” the Emerald Coast and its off-shore
islands and cliffs that are particularly popular with
underwater sportsmen. To fairly get to know the people
who may appear quite reserved but in fact are very endearing,
you either should bring a lot of time or return one
day. In a southeasterly direction are the Ponza Islands
and the nearly uninhabited islands of Palmarola and
Zannone as well as the principle island Ponza with green
wilderness and pretty villages. A starting point for
this area is the island of Procida being of volcanic
origin and covered with subtropical vegetation.

Sardinia
– Emerald Coast Sardinia
is the second largest island of the Mediterranean Sea and
is even today an insider`s tip for individualists. Enchantingly
it present itself as a charming and austere scenery: uncountable
picturesque rocky bays and beautiful sandy beaches, fantastic
crystal-clear deep blue or emerald water, rugged rocks,
bizarrely formed granite blocks, spacious cork tree forests,
the evergreen Maccia and small pretty villages. Sardinia
still is a splendid address for vacation in Italy. Here
you will find an intact world without touristic strongholds
and mass tourism. It is an oasis under the sun that shines
over 3000 hours a year onto the beaches of finest sand.
Between Corsica and Sardinia are the Lavezzi Islands and
the Maddalena Archipelago. Both of these groups of islands
are reminiscent of the Caribbean with more than a hint of
Italy about them. Northeasterly is the well-known Costa.
Smeralda with exclusive marinas
such as Porto Cervo being an international meeting place
for yachtsmen..

Elba
Elba
Island is a popular starting point for various cruises in
different directions - not only because of its advantageous
marinas but also because of its ideal position. It is a
charming jewel in the Toscanian Archipelago. Its scenery
impresses by an enchanting variety. Fertile valleys with
orchards, well-tended vineyards, deeply fissured steep coasts,
chestnut forests, small fishing and harbour villages are
characteristic for the multifarious scenery. Two fortresses
are guarding Portoferraio and its bustling life at the port
and in the picturesque old town and its small “palazzi”.
Numerous small bays and rocky, sandy or shingle beaches
invite to bathing, sailing, surfing or diving.

Sicilia,

| Wind
and weather |
The all year
round mild and even climate makes Italy one of the
most classical destination for a perfect holiday.
For yachtsmen this means an ideal area, especially
in the south, from spring to late fall. The predominant
west winds are likely to be interrupted by the Mistral
in the Ligurian Sea and in the west of Sardinia.Being
one of the stronger winds, the Chirocco is worth
mentioning. |
