Alghero
Alghero is an inviting harbour on the west coast of Sardinia offering all facilities as well as the charming choice of a shopping trip or interesting excursions by land and sea. There are three good landmarks: the Torre del Lazzaretto Watchtower situated approximately half a nautical mile north of Cape Galera; the Fertilia Church Bell Tower with its white roof located to the north in the centre of the gulf and the red and white striped tower of the Isolotto della Maddalena Beacon in the east. Mooring spots for visiting yachts are available on the town quayside below the old town walls. Should all these be occupied, alternative berths are available by steering into the northern part of the port basin, these being under the management of Alghero Yacht Club.
The town was conquered by Pedro of Aragon in the 14th century and has retained its Spanish flair to the present day, many of the older people still speaking Catalan. The sights of the walled town include a gothic cathedral, various gothic chapels and some mighty fortified towers.
