Sykarus (Siracusa) at
the Ionian Sea, on the southeastern coast of Sicily consists of 2 parts:
The baroque old part of the town on the Ortigia Peninsula and the Parco Archaeologico
in the new part of the town which had been one of the most important cities in
the Mediterranean Sea before the conquest of the Romans in 212 BC. It is situated
in a touristic area and is one of the greatest archaeological centres of the ancient
Greek civilization. Its great Greek theatre with its even today almost untouched
stone steps can take an audience of 15,000 people and has a diameter of 138 metres
and is the most famous memorial in Sykarus. The Fort Euryalos had been built between
the 5th and 4th century AC and is a maze of passages. The city had even been so
powerful that it succeeded in a battle against Athens. Next to the theatre is
the Latomia del Paradiso, a grave with the well-known Ear of Dionysos and a cave
with outstanding acoustics.
