Marina
Agana,
is situated in the village
of Marina, 12 km west of Trogir at the end of Marinska
bay, which extends deep into the mainland.
Although only 897
people live in this small community all year round,
it offers seasonal guests every comfort imaginable,
great service and an exceptionally warm welcome. The
village is considered to be the premier bathing resort
in central Dalmatia. As early as the sixteenth century,
the wealthy residents of Trogir escaped the heat by
retreating to the shadows of the olive trees in Marina
and the neighbouring bays.
Marina has lost nothing
of its excellent reputation to the present day: elegant,
rustic restaurants, sports facilities and a harbour
full of chartered yachts cater for everybody’s
holiday needs.
The square tower,
which belongs to a small fort that was almost completely
destroyed, was built between 1495 and 1500 on the orders
of the bishops of Trogir to protect the treasures of
the clergy. Back then, the entire region was besieged
and threatened by Turkish troops. This meant that wealthy
families did not just erect forts to protect themselves
and the local population – they also constructed
"bunker" towers for gold, fresco paintings,
icons and other works of art.
The tower was
restored in 1971 and has been used as a hotel ever since,
but it still boasts a wonderful view - and cuisine which
is almost just as fantastic.
