Sweden

Our winters are long and dark up here in Sweden. But, then when the sun starts to climb higher and higher each day, the evenings get bluer and the nights brighter, then for us Swedes since time immemorial this has been a reason to celebrate, to dance, to sing and to be happy. For, finally we can celebrate mid-summer, all night long – no, for whole nights and days on end. And we extend a warm welcome to you, who have come here from many different countries, to join in the celebrations with us, to dance and be merry, throughout this long, wonderful mid-summer!” Can there be a more beautiful invitation to visit southern Sweden than these words spoken from under the maypole at the Skansen open-air museum in Stockholm to a multitude of mid-summer visitors? Summer in Sweden is a phenomenon – and not only from a meteorological point of view. Admittedly, southern Sweden is still a long way from the polar circle of the north, that line beyond which there’s a full sun in the sky even at night. Nevertheless, the nights here in Stockholm and Östergötland, in Smaland and Schonen are still bright and nature still seems to explode into a verdant, full bloom.
Southern Sweden represents only a third of Sweden’s landmass, yet it’s in this third that 85% of the total population live.
It’s here that the country’s three largest cities are located, Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö, here that the biggest industrial firms have settled, yet also here where the main countryside is to be found.Sweden’s biggest lakes, Vänern and Vättern, small semi-enclosed seas, are in the south-west, as are Sweden’s largest islands: Gotland, Öland and Orust. And the country’s only western coastline also belongs to southern Sweden, the resort and skerry coasts of Halland and Bohuslän on the Kattegat, where the gulf stream adds a mild touch to southern Sweden’s climate.
Last but not least, southern Sweden is also a land of castles and stately homes. Schonen’s fertile countryside fostered a rich farming culture, led to imposing estates and to castle-like manorhouses. And in the period of great Swedish power, after the Thirty Years War, deserving military leaders and politicians had castles and estates built for them, many in the Södermanland region, which to this day is still characterised by a wealth such buildings.
WIND AND WEATHER
Despite its distinctly northern location, the climate of Sweden is relatively mild. This is mainly due to the predominant westerly winds and the influence of the Gulf stream from the relatively warm North Atlantic Ocean. Sailors can generally expect a south-westerly wind of 5 bft. The best period for sailing is from June to September. July is the warmest month, with average temperatures ranging from 20° to 25 ° Celsius.
