Slovenia
– Get away from it all ....meet hospitality! | SY=Sailingyachts

Slovenia – at first glance it seems like
a familiar picture: a white Baroque church in the sunlight, fleecy clouds, lush
and green grassland and mountains in the back reminiscent of Bavaria or Austria.
But not only the agricultural affinity is strong but also the historical and cultural
one, shown in the liveries, the music, the food and the customs. For hundred of
years the small country had been a tacit member of the Austrian nation. But to
simply dismiss it as Austria´s smaller sister would be wrong. A separate,
sheer unique image arises if one adds up the Italian and Hungarian influence as
well as the Mediterranean and Pannonian atmosphere which is reflected by the people,
the climate and the countryside. Nature has denied Slovenia hardly anything: the
lime-white, 3000-metre high summits of the Julian Alps, the Karawank mountain
range and the Steiner Alps in the north, boundless lowland and lovely hilly landscape
in the south and east, fascinating karst-ranges in the heart of the land and also
the bright and sunny seaboard in the west. The Slovenian people are a gentle,
reposeful folk – no exuberant southerners or introverted and reserved northerners
but a people with a distinctive sense for the right balance. Their hospitality
and helpfulness are one of the pleasures you´ll certainly get to know during
your sojourn in Slovenia. Slovenia is as regards history and culture an essential
part of Central Europe but, however, largely unknown and is often mistaken for
Slavonia or Slovakia. Absolutely worth seeing are the “Mummies of Vodnjan”
aside a number of cities abandoned due to the Black Death or Mirna-valley where
you can try truffles in Buzet!

By car: You´ll
easily reach Slovenia through the Karawank-Tunnel and some mountain passes connected
with Central European road networks. From Germany along the Salzburg motorway
or the Tauern motorway, from Vienna along the Vienna-Graz-Maribor and from Italy
along the motorway to Trieste. By train: Slovenia has an area-wide
railway-network of a length of nearly 1,200 kilometres, all of which some 500
kilometres are electrified. Almost every bigger village is within reach by train
at one of the lowest prices in Europe. Furthermore, Slovenia is connected to the
Intercity and Eurocity-network. The following express trains cross the country:
“Mirmara” and “Mostar” (Munich-Zagreb), “Ljubljana”
(Rijeka-Vienna), “Cibalia” and “Croatia” (Zagreb-Geneva,
Zagreb-Rome, Budapest-Venetia), “Kras” and “Venetia” (Zagreb-Venetia)
By plane: The airports of Ljubljana and Maribor are two bigger international
airports, but there is also the smaller one, Portoroz, at the Adiatic Sea. Most
important airport of destination is the capitol of Ljubljana. There are daily
flight connections to Munich, Frankfurt and Zurich. Except Adria Airways, also
Lufthansa, Swissair, Austrian Airlines and Aeroflot fly to Ljubljana. By
bus: From many German, Austrian and Swiss cities many travel coaches go
to Ljubljana, Maribor or Trieste and are connected to the regional passenger traffic.

Stay Climate: What
is true for the Slovenia´s geographical trisection, is also applicable to
the climate. Three climate areas distinctively differ from each other: the Mediterranean
climate in the coastal stretches of the Adriatic, an alpine climate in the northern
parts of the country and a temperate continental climate in the east. The Mediterranean
climate is characterized by warm, dry summers and mild winters. The times of most
rain are in October, November, February and March with virtually no snow. The
relatively high content of salt in the Adriatic and a current from the south to
the north never let the water get below 12°C. The feature of the ocean as
a heat accumulator and the sheltering mountains in the hinterland are responsible
for the mild climate in which even palm trees are growing. The water temperature
in summer averages out between 23°C and 25°C. The average hours of sun
on the coast are between 8 and 12 hours a ay, the number of cloudless days is
about 100. The average temperature in January is about 5°C, in July about
23°C. A bit unpleasant in winter might be the Bora, a cold, dry eastwind.
