Alcudia - Mallorca

Bay of Alcudia
As a large peninsula with the Atalya de Alcudia (450 metres) the capes de Menorca and del Pinar jut out into the sea and have often induced yachtsmen to say a prayer until finally the Pollensa Bay appears - more precisely: only its vertex all around ascending to form Majorca`s highest and most massive mountain range. If the mountains are already indescribably impressive - protruding to the northernmost point - then you should see Cape Formentor on the peninsula of the same name and its lighthouse at a height of 210 metres. A sheer endless serpentine road leads to Cape Formentor on which you are provided at this dizzy height with the most fantastic view not only over the Pollensa Bay and over to Menorca but at the same time over the wild capes on the northern side of the islands, which exceeds all the ruggedness and scenic magnificence youīve then seen so far. In the "bahias" de Alcudia and Pollensa a fast wind from a northern-northeastern direction is prevailing during the day - perfect for sailors and surfers. But while the northwestern stretch of the bay in Puerto de Alcudia is a good shelter, itīs not possible to put into Picafort and Serra-Noca when there is accruing sea state. It can be a good deal of work to sail around Cape Formentor. The sea is rarely smooth - even with weaker winds the swell is likely to be rather strong around the steep and rugged rock faces with innumerable grottos inside them. An ever changing silhouette of this uninhabited coast can be marvelled at. High mountains are jutting into the sea and precipitates from a great height.
Puerto de Alcudia

Picturesquely lined by hills, the port of Acudia can be found at the same place like the Roman Pollentia, which had been the islandīs former capitol and is a spacious industrial and fishing port as well as a marina in the north west of large Alcudia Bay that can be put into whatever the weather conditions are like. Itīs a good assistance during the day to head for the two stacks and the breakwater extending in a south-western direction and behind which is the trade port. At night the navigational lights of Aucanada and the head of the breakwater is a good orientation guide. What is also lighted are the tanker bridge and the moles of the fishing port and the marina. Except the port front, Puerto de Alcudia has no special atmosphere. The huge hotels are a bit more remote. Absolutely worth recommending is a trip to the drowsy town of Alcudia only 2 kilometres from Puerto Alcudia which is surrounded by a city wall crowned with towers from the Middle Ages with well-fortified gates. Remnants of Majorcaīs Roman capitol, Pollentia, are to be visited nearby.
