 Kusadasi
There`s probably hardly anyone who isn`t keen
on leaving behind the sticky air of Izmir. The dream to feel a pleasant and cool
sea breeze in one´s nose is being fulfilled in Kusadasi, for instance. This place
isn´t really one of the most inviting of the Aegean Sea. Urban development doesn´t
seem to be the city´s strength: rampant hotel buildings, holiday villages, camping
sites and discotheques predominate. Hardly anyone comes to Kusadasi because of
Kusadasi per se - but maybe because of the historic sites nearby (Priene, Ephesus)
or the varied landscape or simply because he wants to spend an adventurous holiday
by the sea. About the Greek past little is known. But anyway, it is much more
important that Kusadasi (" birds` island") was founded by Genoese and Venetian
merchants in the 13th century with a special permission from Byzantium. The position
for the new city - originally Scala Nova - was defined because the old harbour
of nearby Ephesus had silted up and therefore became useless. Being still visible,
the road network dates from this medieval form of road construction and planning.
 Only
in Ottoman times the place was named "Kusadasi" - in the 16th and definitely in
the 17th century they occupied the place. From the end of WWI until 1922 Italian
troops occupied the city until their defeat through the Turks. There are some
good-value restaurants. Absolutely worth seeing is the Caravan Serai built by
Mehmet Pacha in the 17th century (directly at the port, was changed into a hotel
comprising 40 very exclusive rooms, restaurant, bar and discotheque). Another
sight is the city wall of which the southern ring at the local police station
can still be seen.
